HIGGS Capt. G.W. (Joe), born February 11, 1932 in Sidney, B.C., passed away March 15, 2004 in Lantzville, B.C. Predeceased by his father Capt. Thomas Higgs in 1968, his mother Kathleen Westwood Higgs in 1985 and his brother Capt. John Higgs in 2002. Left to mourn his passing, his loving wife Hilda; daughters, Elisa MacFarlane, Adrienne Higgs, Jodi Higgs (Bruce). Step-children, Deanna and Derrick (Suzanne) Georgeson; grandchildren, Taylor, Karli, Cameron, Thomas, Miles, Savannah and Marcus. Sister Dorothy Purcell; brothers, Capt. Walter (Walna) Cullinan, Capt. Martin (Rita) Higgs. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Joe was born in Sidney, B.C. and moved to Nanaimo as an infant. He spent his childhood in Nanaimo where his father and uncle owned and operated Nanaimo Towing Co. and the Gabriola ferry. Joe was well known on the B.C. Coast where he worked as Master for numerous years for Young and Gore, Island Tug & Barge, Seaspan International and then 24 years with the B.C. Coast Pilots until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of Mount Elphinstone Masonic Lodge No. 130. He was a member of Nanaimo Yacht Club, also the North West Steam Society.
